Workshop · Sand Casting for Organic Jewelry
Experimentation, Materials, and Real Workshop Processes
This workshop was born from years of trials, errors, and countless hours experimenting alone in the workshop.
It is suitable for both beginners with no prior experience who want to get started in sand casting, as well as more experienced jewelers who wish to refine their skills and achieve more advanced techniques.
Many of the techniques and processes I use today were not learned in a school, but by making mistakes again and again: testing materials, breaking pieces, discarding tools, and adapting systems until I found my own way of working.
The idea of this workshop is precisely to share that experience: not as an academic jewelry course, but as a much closer, practical, and real session, focused on helping you understand the process, experiment without fear, and discover a freer and more organic way of working with metal.
What will we work on during the workshop?
During the session, we will explore different processes related to sand casting applied to organic and textured jewelry.
- Sand preparation and compaction
- Types of molds and models
- Reliefs and textures for casting
- Preparation of sprues and gates
- Small decorative details
- Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Metal behavior during casting
- Cleaning and subsequent finishing
We will also look at real tools, systems, and materials that I use in my own artisanal work.
Some of these tools have been developed or adapted after a long time of testing, especially for working with rings, seals, and pieces with more complex reliefs.
During the workshop, you will be able to see them, try them, and, if you wish, acquire some of the tools or implements I use in my own process.
A much more practical and experimental approach
This workshop is not focused on creating perfect pieces or following a rigid step-by-step technique.
The idea is to experiment, understand how the metal responds, and learn to work the process in a more natural, conscious, and creative way.
The main objective of the workshop is not to leave with a perfect finished piece, but to understand the process, experiment with the material, and acquire a real foundation from which to continue developing and exploring the technique on your own.
Precisely a large part of the difficulty of sand casting lies in knowing where to start, what materials to use, and how to avoid many of the common mistakes that appear at the beginning.
Often the most difficult thing is not finding information, but understanding what materials really work, what tools are worthwhile, or how to solve the problems that arise during the process.
And precisely that part is what I want to share here.
Materials
The workshop includes:
- Use of tools and machinery
- Sand and consumable materials
- Bronze for practical tests
- Models and practice pieces prepared for the session
Silver is not included.
If you wish to do any tests in silver:
- You can bring your own shot or silver
- Or request material in advance to prepare it before the workshop
In that case, it will be necessary to consult beforehand to calculate the approximate amount needed according to the type of piece, size, sprues, and possible losses inherent in the process.
Format
- Individual workshop
- Approximate duration: 4 hours
- Booking by appointment
- Very limited places
A different way of learning
More than teaching a closed technique, the idea of this workshop is to share a real way of working based on years of experimentation, errors, adaptation, and artisanal learning.
A space to explore materials, overcome fear of the process, and understand casting from a practical and close experience.
